Alstom is an industry leader in power generation and transportation. The challenge was to provide a test facility for voltage source converters (VSC) - used to convert DC power to AC - to safely exercise and test the units which operate at limits of 2.5kV and 2000A.

Due to the extreme dangers inherent with testing equipment at such high power, operator safety was of utmost importance. Isolating the user in an exclusion zone along with an automatic cut off upon entry was essential to the project.

The equipment was large and heavy, and necessitated the use of a testing bay where it could be connected with the aid of a hydraulics system. The computer system and National Instruments (NI) testing platform also needed to be shielded from the high currents in use.

Deliver

As NI experts providing control, test and automation, and an NI Gold Alliance Member, TBG Solutions successfully developed a testing platform that could be operated by the user at a safe distance with a comprehensive set of safety measures in place, ensuring maximum safety while maintaining optimum throughput. The test solution comprised an exclusion zone with flash proof filtered windows, preventing contact with hazards.

The exclusion zone housed 2x 3kV DC power supplies and the testing station into which the VSCs could be wheeled. These stations were operated from outside the exclusion zone using bespoke software that was connected via fibre optic cabling, negating the risk of exposure to high voltages and ensuring maximum operator safety.
