Overview

TBG Solutions designs and manufactures bespoke automated electrical test equipment for customers operating in demanding engineering sectors, including aerospace and defence.

We are looking for a Production Engineer to provide day-to-day technical support to our Cable Assembly team.

This is a practical engineering role focused on solving the problems that arise when bespoke cable and harness designs move from engineering documentation into manufacture. You will work closely with our Cable Assembly Engineers, Electrical Design Engineers, Production Manager, Quality team, Project teams, customers and suppliers to investigate build issues, resolve technical queries, address tooling problems and improve the information and processes used to manufacture our cable assemblies. Where a build cannot fully meet the released design, you may also be responsible for documenting the issue and supporting or obtaining formal customer concession approval before work proceeds.

Because much of our work is low-volume and project-specific, you will not simply be maintaining an established production line. You will regularly encounter new assemblies, new components and engineering challenges that require practical judgement and problem solving.

TBG Solutions designs and manufactures bespoke automated test and measurement systems. Our projects bring together electrical, electronic, mechanical, software and systems engineering with in-house manufacturing and assembly.

Our Cable Assembly team manufactures the bespoke harnesses and interconnection assemblies used within our test systems, and this role will provide dedicated engineering support to that operation.

Experience Required

What we're looking for This role would particularly suit someone with a practical electrical manufacturing background who has progressed into production, manufacturing or engineering support. Essential
  • Practical experience with cable assemblies, wiring looms, harnesses, control panels or similar electrical manufacturing.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings, wiring diagrams and cable schedules.
  • Good understanding of connectors, contacts, wire types, cable, sleeving, identification and termination methods.
  • Understanding of crimping, soldering and other common cable assembly techniques.
  • Experience troubleshooting manufacturing or assembly problems.
  • Ability to document technical problems, proposed dispositions and supporting evidence clearly enough for internal approval and, where required, formal customer concession/deviation requests.
  • Practical understanding of cable-assembly tooling and the ability to diagnose tooling, setup or process issues affecting build quality or repeatability.
  • Ability to interpret BOMs and technical documentation.
  • Good understanding of configuration and engineering change control.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Production and Design Engineering teams.
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills.
  • Comfortable working directly with manufacturing personnel on the shop floor.
  • HNC/HND in Electrical, Electronic, Production or Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • Working within an AS9100 or similarly controlled quality environment.
The type of person who will suit the role We're looking for someone who enjoys solving practical engineering problems. You'll need to be comfortable moving between drawings, components and the actual assembly on the bench rather than working entirely from a desk. You should be able to listen to the issue being raised by an experienced assembler, understand the underlying engineering problem and work collaboratively with Design Engineering to arrive at a practical solution. Just as importantly, we want someone who asks why the problem occurred and how we prevent it happening again, rather than simply getting today's build moving. Where the correct resolution requires a design change, customer concession or new tooling, you should be comfortable driving that issue through to a properly documented and controlled outcome.

Responsibilities

What you'll be doing Your main responsibility will be keeping cable assembly work progressing when technical or manufacturing issues arise.
  • Provide hands-on technical support to Cable Assembly Engineers during manufacture.
  • Investigate problems with drawings, wiring schedules, BOMs, connector details and assembly information.
  • Resolve discrepancies between design documentation and the physical components being assembled.
  • Work with Electrical Design Engineering to clarify or correct drawings and manufacturing information.
  • Identify incorrect, unsuitable or difficult-to-manufacture design details and propose practical solutions.
  • Support the introduction and manufacture of new cable and harness assemblies.
  • Review cable designs for manufacturability before they reach Production.
  • Support first-off builds and identify improvements before repeat manufacture.
  • Produce and improve work instructions, build information and manufacturing documentation.
  • Resolve production tooling issues and ensure the correct crimp tools, dies/locators, insertion and extraction tools, test fixtures and assembly aids are specified, available, suitable and maintained for the work being performed.
  • Support component selection and identify suitable alternatives where parts become unavailable or unsuitable.
  • Investigate production defects and non-conformances and help establish root cause and corrective action.
  • Document deviations and non-conforming conditions clearly, prepare concession/deviation requests with appropriate technical evidence and rationale, and work with Quality, Engineering and Project teams to obtain and record customer approval where required.
  • Feed manufacturing lessons back into the engineering team so recurring issues are designed out.
  • Maintain accurate BOM and configuration information as designs change.
  • Support Quality with inspection criteria and resolution of manufacturing queries.
  • Work with suppliers where technical issues arise with connectors, cable, backshells, contacts or other bought-in components.
  • Identify opportunities to improve quality, build time, repeatability and manufacturing efficiency.
The sort of problems you'll solve The role is intended to be close to the people actually building the product. On a typical project you might be asked to investigate why:
  • A backshell or connector cannot be assembled as shown on the drawing.
  • The specified cable will not physically fit within the selected connector or gland.
  • A crimp contact does not suit the specified wire gauge.
  • A cable drawing, wiring schedule and BOM contain conflicting information.
  • A component is obsolete or unavailable and an alternative is required.
  • A harness cannot be routed or terminated as designed.
  • A cable assembly is taking considerably longer to manufacture than expected.
  • A recurring workmanship or quality issue needs its root cause identified.
  • The specified tooling is unavailable, unsuitable, damaged, out of calibration or not producing a repeatable acceptable termination.
  • The assembly cannot fully meet the released drawing or specification and the deviation needs to be technically assessed, documented and submitted to the customer for concession.
  • The workshop needs clearer manufacturing or inspection instructions.
  • A design technically works but is unnecessarily difficult to manufacture.
The expectation is not simply to report the problem back to Engineering. We want someone capable of understanding the issue, developing a sensible solution and working with the appropriate people to get it resolved.
